Galvan Introduces Improved Galvanized Ground Rod To Meet New ANSI/NEMA GR-1-2001 StandardCHARLOTTE -- Galvan Industries, Inc. has announced the availability of a new galvanized ground rod designed to meet requirements set forth by the recently released ANSI/NEMA GR-1-2001 specification. The new spec establishes a national standard to improve the dimensional and physical characteristics, as well as the material quality of galvanized ground rods used in the construction , industrial, and utilities markets. Galvan’s new GR-1 Series hot-dip galvanized ground rods are made of high-strength steel as required by the new specification. The new rods drive straighter and can be used with industry standard couplings to drive to multiple depths. The core of the new rod is cold drawn steel with a minimum tensile strength of 80,000 pounds per square inch (psi). This makes them more resistant to bending and “mushrooming” during installation. The driving or blunt end of the new rod is chamfered to further reduce the possibility of “mushrooming.” The penetrating end is finished with a true conical point for less deflection and easier, straighter driving. The point and chamfer end configurations allow for the use of couplings. Rods with “lancer” points will not accept couplings and do not meet the new specification. All critical characteristics of the new GR-1 galvanized rod have been increased to exactly coincide with the UL Listed 5/8-inch nominal diameter copper-clad rods. Galvan will also continue to manufacture a larger, non-NEMA standard 5/8-inch nominal galvanized rod for an interim period, to smooth the transition to the new specification. The new NEMA GR-1 grounding specification forms a new minimum acceptable standard for all users of galvanized ground rods. Release of the new ANSI/NEMA spec for the first time brings to the electrical industry a nationally recognized document identifying critical material and chemical properties for hot-dip galvanized ground rods.
