NEMA Releases Standard on Grounding Rod Electrodes

ROSSLYN, Va -- NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, has released ANSI/NEMA GR 1-2001, Grounding Rod Electrodes and Grounding Rod Electrode Couplings.

Ground rod electrodes, solid metal electrodes that are driven into the ground and used as grounding electrodes, are typically sold to electrical wholesalers for the construction and industrial markets or directly to electric utilities.

This ANSI-approved standard, which replaces NEMA GR 1-1997, provides information concerning the construction, testing, performance, and manufacture of ground rod electrodes and ground rod electrode couplings. Included is information about materials, construction, and performance of copper bonded and hot-dip galvanized ground rod electrodes. This standards publication also includes information for electrode products that have been successfully used for many years but are not defined within the National Electrical Code.

The new specifications relating to copper-bonded ground rod electrodes and galvanized ground rod electrodes are the final effort to establish a national standard to improve product quality as well as dimensional and physical characteristics for users of galvanized ground rods.

The NEMA 8CC-V committee successfully received ANSI approval of the GR-1 Ground Rod and Coupling specification on September 10, 2001, which for the first time brings to the electrical industry a nationally recognized document identifying critical material and chemical properties for hot-dip galvanized ground rods,î says committee chairman Roger Montambo. ìThe performance characteristics of galvanized ground rods complying with this specification parallel that of the UL-listed copper-clad rod whose performance history is unquestionable.

ANSI/NEMA GR 1 may be purchased for $36.00 by contacting Global Engineering Documents at (800) 854-7179 (within the U.S.), (303) 397-7956 (international), (303) 397-2740 (fax), or on the Internet at www.global.ihs.com.

NEMA, celebrating its 75th anniversary, is the leading trade association in the United States representing the interests of electroindustry manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end-use of electricity. Annual shipments of these products total $100 billion.
